89th Annual Outing

Mt. Rainier, WA

August 1 – 15, 2020

The 2020 Annual Outing will be held in the vicinity of Mt. Rainier National Park, known for its premier scenery and hiking trails, historic lodges, and outstanding wildflowers. The camp site is about 24 miles south of the Stevens Canyon entrance to Mt. Rainier and also offers day hiking possibilities at Goat Rocks, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St Helens.

The campsite is located on private property, known as the Huntington Homestead, in Packwood, WA

Signup for the Outing will be open to Chemeketan members starting March 1 and to non-members on April 1. Online registration and payment will again be available, as well as paper registration and check payment that can be mailed in. Non-members will need to submit the paper registration form and pay by check OR be registered online by a club member as their guest. Outing fees remain the same as last year - $200 per week for adult members, $250 for non-members – and must be paid in full for registration to be complete. Participants can register for the first week, second week or both weeks of the Outing.  Fee and registration details will follow at a later date.

Full breakfasts and dinners are prepared by professional cooks and a variety of sack lunch items are provided each day. Campers share duties during the week and help at truck loading and unloading in Salem.

Participants are expected to bring their own camping gear. Water and limited electrical outlets will be available. There will be space for RVs, but no hookups are available. 

Additional information will be posted here and a full hiking guide for the area as well as camp procedures will be available online through this site by early June. The same guide in printed form will be available at the Pre-Outing meeting and at camp.  The pre-Outing meeting date and location TBA

Truck Loading will be the evening of July 30 and unloading will be August 16 – details to be announced.

The 2019 Annual Outing was held near Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park. We camped at Hat Creek Group Camp just south of Old Station, CA.

The 2018 Outing was held along the North Fork Nooksack River near Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan, Washington.  We camped at Excelsior Group Camp, USFS and enjoyed outstanding scenery and hiking.

The 2017 Outing was held in the Redwoods of northern California. Although this was a departure from our usual mountain setting, the Outing was a success due to the unique scenery, numerous trails, kayaking opportunities and other activities. We were guests of the Yurok Tribe.

The 2016 Outing was in the Wallowa Mountains of NE Oregon with their abundance of hiking trails and nearby attractions. We were guests of the Nez Perce on their Tribal Homeland.

The 2015 Outing campground was near home at Deschutes Bridge, southwest of Bend. Campers hiked Three Sisters Wilderness trails which are too far from home for a day trip and kayaked the numerous area lakes.

The 2014 Outing was held on the Blackfeet Tribal Campground just north of St. Mary, Montana. Participants enjoyed the magnificent hikes of Glacier National Park and the abundant wildlife.

The 2013 Outing campground was in the town of Packwood, a few miles south of Mt. Rainier National Park. Participants had access to the National Park, as well as many trails in the Goat Rocks area. Wildflowers on many of the trails were spectacular.

The 2012 Annual Outing was held in the Fawn Group Campground in the Trinity Alps of northern California, adjacent Trinity (Claire Engle) Reservoir. Temperatures were unseasonably hot, even for that area, but hikers found many beautiful hikes and swimming holes to enjoy.

The 2011 Annual Outing was held at the Chemeketan Campground July 30 through August 13, 2011 in Idaho's Sawtooth Wilderness. The Outing was held near the south end of Idaho’s Stanley Basin,  located about 35 miles north of the Ketchum/Sun Valley area. This is the headwaters of the Salmon River, “The River of No Return.”

The 2010 Annual Outing was held near Trout Lake, Washington July 31 through August 14, 2010 on the south side of 12,276-foot Mt. Adams. Mt. Adams is a spectacular glacier-clad mountain which presides over a land rich in Native American history.

The 2009 Annual Outing was held at Skykomish, Washington from Saturday, August 1 through Saturday August 15, 2009.  Skykomish is located on U.S. Hwy 2 on the west side of Stevens Pass and is approximately 49 miles east of Everett, WA. or 55 miles west of Leavenworth, WA.

The 2008 Outing was held at the Wallowa Mountains of northeast Oregon beginning Saturday, August 2, 2008.   The campsite was located on the Wolfe Ranch near Lostine, Oregon .  

The 2007 Outing was held at the Olympic National Park from Saturday, July 28th through Saturday, August 11th. The Outing campsite was at the Clallam County Fairgrounds at Port Angeles, Washington.

The 2006 Outing was held at the Broken Arrow Campground at Diamond Lake, Oregon from Saturday, July 29th, to Saturday, August 12th.

The 2005 Outing was held in the Maroon-Bells Wilderness, Colorado at the Bogan Flats Group Camp Saturday, July 30 through Saturday, August 13.

The 2004 Outing was held July 31st through August 14th at the North Cascades National Park at the Lower Goodell Group Camp. The North Cascades are in northern Washington easterly from Sedro-Woolley, Washington.

The 2003 Outing was held Aug. 2-16 near Lassen Peak, California at Hat Creek Campground with hiking in Lassen Volcanic National Park.

The 2002 Outing was held at the Chemeketan Group Camp site in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho about 27 miles south of Stanley, Idaho.

The 2001 Outing was July 29 to August 12 at the North Fork Group Camp sites on the North Fork of the Cispus River near Randle, Washington.

The 2000 Outing was July 29-August 12 in the Wind River Range in Wyoming at North Fork Lake near Pinedale, WY.

The 1999 Outing was July 31-August 14 at Excelsior Park in northern Washington near Mt. Baker.
