Paula Hyatt (Oct. 1, 1924 - Dec. 25, 2019)

Paula came from Chicago and Highland Park, Illinois, got her BS degree, and taught physical education in Michigan and Oregon.  In Salem, she joined the Chemeketans and met Kim who was a climber.  They were married in 1962 and had two daughters, Karen and Gwen.  Together they made huge contributions to the club during their 60 years of membership.  Paula was president 5 times, vice president 3 times and served on almost every committee we have.  She helped update the club by-laws and did not always agree with other members but could be very persuasive in changing their views (perhaps from her years as a PE teacher).

Paula participated in canoeing (an expert paddler from week long trips in the boundary waters of Minnesota), bicycling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, bouillabaisse weekend at the coast, cabin events, backpacking, hiking, and most of the annual outings.  For many years, Kim and Paula scouted for outing locations, finding many that we have returned to over the years.  She led countless trips for our members and knew of more places to visit than anyone I have ever known.  Well into her 90’s Paula could be seen walking through parks and downtown Salem with her sturdy alpine stock.

Let us remember all we have enjoyed and the places we have seen on outings with Paula.
