Mt Hood, South Side S1 -- CANCELLED

When: Thursday, May 7 or Friday May 8, 2020

Where: Mount Hood, South Side

Provisional Leader: Shonee Langford

Observing Leader: Mike Pennington

Elevation Gain: ~5300 feet

Distance: ~7-8 miles round trip

Team Size: 8-12 (TBD based on applicant pool)

We will ascend the south side of Mt Hood via one of the standard routes.  We are going on a weekday to avoid weekend crowds. My preference is the Pearly Gates if the route is still in good shape. If not, we will take the Old Chute.  In typical spring Hood fashion, we will leave Timberline Lodge at approximately midnight-1am, looking to summit sometime shortly after dawn, and back to the cars by early afternoon. Depending on route and conditions, we may use a running belay with pickets, a fixed line, or go ropeless. We will assess routes, conditions, and the team’s comfort level. Climbers need to be comfortable climbing steep exposed snow slopes with crampons and ice axe.

Required personal gear and clothing will include: Helmet, ice axe, crampons, harness, belay device, personal pro, prusiks, carabiners, adequate layered clothing system and mountaineering boots (NOTE: Mountaineering boots HIGHLY preferred. If you would like to wear something else, you need to contact me with what you have and we will discuss).

Please read this prospectus before you apply to make sure you have the right gear and skills: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zKnIudhsYeCSNR7LFISa6-BX4wvs2rGc/view?usp=sharing

To apply: Contact me (Shonee Langford) via email at
shoneelangford@gmail.com with answers to the following questions:

1. Which mountains have you climbed in the past year?

2. Who were the leaders of the climbs you mentioned in response to question #1?

3. What is your current routine for staying physically fit and preparing for this climb?

4. Are you available to climb on May 7 and May 8?  This is a one-day climb that will occur on either a Thursday or a Friday, and we won’t know which day until maybe 1-2 days before the climb (depends on weather).

5. Have you climbed Mt Hood before? Priority will be given to Hood first-timers.

6. Did you read the prospectus and do you have any related questions/concerns?

Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
