Five hikers-- Pat Fuhrman, Don Voegele, Sarah Boomer, Ric LaTour, and Susan LaTour -- hiked the beautifully green "Santiam Wagon Trail Research Expedition" on an surprisingly perfect day. The Trail exceeded expectation in another way, as Sarah, a microbiologist studying banana slug microbiome and bacteria (their poop) was on a mission to collect 3 banana slugs on this trip. With her special "slug sense," she found a plethora of slugs, more than she needed. And we got a fascinating lesson in research and slugs in the most beautiful classroom ever.
