Hawk Mountain

We had a beautiful autumn day as we headed up the Breitenbush to hike up Hawk Mountain.  The roadwork was only during the week, so we expected to have to no trouble getting to the trailhead.  WELL! It seems that the company was behind and worked overtime on Saturday.  We had two different stoppages which seemed really long, but probably 20 minutes.  THEN, the trusty leader drove straight past the turn to Hawk.  Shamefaced, she turned around and finally found the trailhead.  After ELEVEN o'clock!  I'm still chagrined.
Luckily, we had a resilient and flexible Chemeketan group.

We picked up two extra hikers at the road blocks.  Deanna and Tom Davis were heading to Hawk and decided to join up with us.  (They thought I knew where the trailhead was)....

Even without the summer flowers, we enjoyed the fall colors in the maples and huckleberries.  We lunched at the top with an expanse of mountains ranging from Hood to the Sisters.  We explored the old lookout cabin which, though still standing, is showing wear after escaping 2 fires.  She needs some paint and some new shutters, for sure.
Enjoying the trail and the group were: Peggy Morris, Ann Adamcik, Becky Hickox, Nadene LeCheminant, Nanci Chambers, Jeff Graham, Mary Liepins, Deanna and Tom Davis and Mary Coleman, leader.
