After a one year break, the Chemeketans annual banquet returned, with about 50 members gathered at Pringle Community Hall on October 3. The event, ably emceed by Ann Hanus, began with icebreaker questions which inspired a lot of conversation and laughter. The caterer provided a great dinner, followed by dessert bars.

Our keynote speaker, Beth Dayton, president of the all-volunteer Salem Area Trail Alliance, gave an informative and inspirational presentation, including many photos and a display of tools used in trail work sessions. She spoke about her history and what brought her to a deep commitment to keeping trails hikeable for everyone wanting to enjoy our beautiful Cascades. She also explained various other ways people can support this access.

Next, Ann presented awards honoring those who have given so much to the club over many years. These included Geoff Barstow, Ken Ash, George and Janet Adkins, Dave and Ann Hanus, Susan LaTour, Carol Soderberg, John Balling and a number of others crucial to the ongoing vitality of the climbing, hiking and other activities of the club. These generally unsung heroes make it possible for the rest of us to safely enjoy the camaraderie of various club events.
Judging from the buzz of conversation and laughter, the evening was a success. Next year, with better publicity and working out a few bugs in the registration system, we hope to bring even more people together to celebrate a great summer outdoors and a great organization.
