NOAA “Updated” Maps
Author Last Post

Hi All,

I received this response below at 10:30 p.m. from the National Weather Service. Seems to me the NWS people work hard all night.

I noticed my local website changed back to normal this afternoon. Given it was a “national update” let’s see what happens next.

Garry,

A national update was pushed out that we were not made aware of. A lot of people are expressing issues with the new map and those messages are being passed along.

A quick workaround if the NOAA map is still broken: if you’re willing to download the CalTopo app, you can use Measure (ruler icon) > Point > NOAA Forecast and tap a point on the map. It’ll open the NOAA conditions page for that point in a browser tab.

Pretty cool app, the free version offers a ton of different map layers, from weather forecasts to slope angle, cell coverage and fire history.

I noticed the change several days ago but, as of now, it appears to have been fixed as the topo is back on the local forecast map; checked on both Chrome and Firefox.

What the map looks like.

Okay, Tim Hale showed me that you have to go down the page and open up the Forecast Weather Table Interface link to get a point forecast. That at least shows the mountains and gives elevations (no contour lines). Here is Rocky Top at 3800 feet.

I noticed it too but didn’t look deeper. Thanks for the heads up.

I emailed and told them the contour maps assisted with safe recreation and search and rescue.

Exactly! I saw that it was a new map, but I thought it was because I was looking at it from my phone.

I noticed the same recently, Cathy.  Thought it was a temporary glitch...

Hi cathy!

I noticed this as well day before yesterday. Is it really crappy map and it makes it very difficult to get the pinpoint forecasts that I'm looking for on my backcountry ski trips. I wonder if this is part of the Trump cuts

How have you been? We should go scramble soon!

Anyone notice the map change on NOAA’s forecast page? It’s some generic map without elevation/contours/features. How great that will be when trying to get weather at a certain elevation on a mountain. I attached the map of trying to look at Rocky Top for a hike on Sunday. Here is an email to the web masters that I found at the bottom of the page for feedback/questions, not that it will do any good.
