Mt. Adams Backpack - August 9-11, 2019
Published on 8/13/2019
We explored the timberline meadows on the less-visited north side of Mt. Adams and found such great wildflowers that I got a cover photo for the next edition of my “100 Hikes in NW Oregon & SW Washington” book. We found that the Killen Creek Trail is heavily used by horses, requires a parking permit, and is farther away than the Divide Camp Trail, so we took that route to timberline instead. Between the two routes is Adams Creek, a raging glacial torrent that pretty much stops all day hikers. Determined hikers on the PCT tromp through it knee deep in their hiking shoes, but admit to terror. We had three days of good weather and two nights of tremendous thunder, lightning, and rain. Leader: Bill Sullivan (Chemeketan and Obsidian); Dawn Mach (Chemeketan), Scott Hovis (Obsidian), and Janell Sorensen (guest).
