We arrived at the trail head parking lot in a downpour. Moments after we arrived, the rain let up and by the time we had our boots on and our gear in order, there was a touch of sunlight. We had heard that the trail had deteriorated and we were eager to check out the actual conditions. At the first muddy section, we all agreed that poles and boots were indeed a necessity! As we descended, we realized that we were in for a slow slog to get to our destination. The trail was deep with mud in many places; so deep that we wondered if our boots would be completely covered. There were so many roots exposed that we had to carefully pick each foot fall. We reached the end of the trail and were pleased that there was only a slight breeze. We enjoyed our rest, lunch and the view. The return seemed easier to execute and at a quarter of a mile from the trailhead we had a bit of a misty rain that was over in moments. The exceptional views and the satisfaction of completing the hike were well worth the effort and caution expended.
