While others were frolicking at the outing, five of us hiked the Perimeter Trail at Silver Falls State Park. We left hordes of people headed to the waterfall trail and enjoyed a quiet morning in the backcountry. Over lunch, Martin Doerfler favored us with an original poem, which to my ears sounded like cowboy poetry but he says is not. (The fine distinction is lost. I’d say poetry with a saloon, high noon gun fightin’, a cattle stampede and a horse named Desire is definitely cowboy poetry.) The company was delightful and the weather was perfect. We ended the morning at the Big Leaf Coffeehouse and Grill at Smith Creek Village in the park.
Hikers included (left to right):
Sumon Montri, Betty and Don Orwick, Martin Doerfler, Nadene LeCheminant (leader) and Marcia Kenagy who took the photo.
Martin Doerfler met us at the trailhead on his classic 1976 BMW.
