About this event
We will do three short hikes in the Old Cascades west of Santiam Pass, touring a mountain basin with wildflowers (2.4 mile loop), a grove of massive old-growth Doug firs (1-mile loop), and an historic wagon road (.8 mile RT with possible extension). The hikes are a short drive apart and make for an interesting day.
Note: I set out on May 22 to pre-hike the Echo Basin Loop but didn't get very far. The 2-mile gravel road to the trailhead has winter damage that makes it tricky in places and the first half-mile of the trail is significantly washed-out and buried under debris from the trees. It then disappears under several feet of snow and becomes impossible to follow. By June 5 it may be do-able and we can check it out but I may substitute nearby Clear Lake instead. Pre-register and we'll decide what to do.
Hiking distance 5 miles RT.
Elevation gain 700 feet.
