CLIMB IS FULL - NOT TAKING ANY MORE NAMES
Mt Hood - South Side S1
Leader: Mike Pennington (mchuckp@gmail.com)
May 23rd or 24th (will pick the better weather window; climbers should be available for either day)
Team Size: 6-8 (team size will depend on # of assistants I have and dynamics of the team)
Elevation Gain: ~5300’
Distance: ~8 miles
We will ascend the south side of Mt Hood via one of the standard routes. We are going on a weekday to avoid weekend crowds. My preference is the Pearly Gates if the route is still in good shape. If not, we will take the Old Chute. In typical spring Hood fashion, we will leave Timberline Lodge at approx midnight-1am, looking to summit sometime shortly after dawn, and back to the cars by early afternoon. Depending on route and conditions, we may use a running belay with pickets, a fixed line, or ropeless. We will assess routes, conditions, and the team’s comfort level. Climbers need to be comfortable climbing steep terrain with crampons.
Required Gear: Ice Ax, crampons, helmet, harness, belay device, personal pro, prusiks, adequate layered clothing system, boots (NOTE: Mountaineering boots HIGHLY preferred. If you would like to wear something else, you need to contact me with what you have and we will discuss if they are acceptable. They MUST be pretty stiff to safely ascend/descend steep snow)
To apply: CLIMB IS FULL. Contact me via email. If I’m not familiar with your experience level, please give me some background on your climbing, hiking, backpacking experience in your initial email. Applicants should be available to climb either day. Priority will be given to those who have not climbed Mt Hood before. Do not hesitate to email me with any questions.
