Women’s Beginner Backpacking Class: Registration for this event is full

This beginner backpacking class for women will be held on Saturday, May 20 from 10:00 until 2:00 (½ day class)
Location: Salem Public Library, Plaza Room
Address: 585 Liberty Street SE, Salem, Oregon

This beginner’s backpacking class/trip is designed for women who are new to backpacking and for those of you who may have backpacked in the past and want to see if you really are interested in taking it up again.

The half day class will cover trip planning, conditioning, gear and what to expect.

The backpacking trip associated with this class will be Friday-Sunday, June 23-June 25
(two-night backpacking trip, approximately 15 miles total)

The backpack trip will be an opportunity to put to use your new knowledge and be supported by experienced backpackers on a moderate trip.  Our exact trip itinerary is still being worked out because so many of the early season hiking trails have been impacted by recent wildfires so we must double check closures and trail conditions once spring arrives.

In general, we will plan to depart on Friday morning, drive to a trailhead (likely 2-3 hour drive), hike up to 5 miles before setting up camp.  Saturday we will hike up to 8 miles before setting up camp with possible side trip options.  Sunday we will hike out to a trailhead, up to 5 miles before heading home.  We will plan approximately 15 miles of total hiking on this trip.  With luck, the weather will be good, but all backpackers are expected to be prepared for cold, wet weather.

Trip leader Sherry McConnell is a 62 years young backpacker whose hiking philosophy is “The greatest risk is to risk nothing at all*” and, oh by the way, this is supposed to be fun.
