Sauvie Island-Warrior Rock Lighthouse
Sauvie Island, where the Columbia and Willamette Rivers meet has a very interesting history, as described in Bill Sullivan's book "Exploring Oregon's History". Lewis and Clark stopped there in 1805. Nathaniel Wyeth built Fort William there about 1832 in an attempt to rival the trading posts at Fort Astoria and Fort Vancouver. (The leader will bring a copy of the book if anyone would like to read it as we carpool). The trail now goes through Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, where herons and bald eagles may be seen, if we are lucky, as well as views of Mt. St. Helens. There is a required $10 per day per car parking permit for the Wildlife Area, however, the leader has one. You might expect the trail to be muddy if we've had recent rains. Please contact the leader by noon the day prior for meeting time and place.
