Frisco Mt and Rainy Peak climbs Saturday - Monday, Aug 31 - Sept 2 Both Frisco (7780') and Rainy (7768') are located just south of Rainy Pass on the North Cascades highway. The Rainy pass trailhead (el 4850’) is ~ 3 hours from Seattle and the approach is via one of the more exquisite North Cascades trails, the Heather & Maple pass loop. Those who’ve done Black Peak in past years will be familiar with some of it. Both peaks are class 2/3 scrambles which would be climbed from a common camp (el 5900’) above Rainy lake.
Gear requirement: helmet only, unless the schedule changes to when snow might be prevalent.
The intent would be to drive up to the trailhead and do the approach (~ 5 miles) on day 1, then summit and return on day 2. The approach is on trail or in open country and should go expeditiously; the peaks are on the same ridge directly above camp and separated only by ~ 1/2 mile. I have not climbed either peak previously but have visited the area numerous times over the years.
