Cape Meares and Bay Ocean - February 12, 2020

Published on 2/13/2020
It was another "typical" winter day on the Oregon coast. Sunshine, no wind, 50 plus degrees. Perfect weather for a hike up the beach, and we arrived at low tide, so the sand was hard and easy to walk on. From the Bay Ocean parking area (no restrooms so no permit required) we hiked north to the Tillamook Bay jetty. Bald eagle on a drift log was a highlight. After lunch on the (jetty) rocks, turned south down the bay side of the spit, stopping at the Bay Ocean town site where state parks has left some very nice tutorial info on the Atlantic City of the West, the town that was swept into the sea. Total hiking distance about 8 miles. Driving distance from Salem - not counting visit to the Tillamook Cheese factory - 160 miles. The hikers were Carol Sauer, Rosanna Wilson, Karin Shinn, Jane Maute, Laurie Walcutt (new), Patty Baskin, Marcia Kenagy, and hike leader Martin Doerfler.
