Six very happy hikers made the trip to Hawk Mountain. The mountain and the historic lookout cabin survived two different fires over the past few years. Four of the hikers had never been on the trail before and were very happy they made the trip. I have been waiting impatiently for the road to reopen so I could check on the health of the trail, the meadow and the cabin. I'm thrilled to announce that, in spite of some burned areas, the trail is still a beauty and the cabin stands, weathered and welcoming. So happy the Forest Service wrapped the cabin to protect it from the fires.
We were a week or two late for a superbloom of beargrass along the lower trail, but found many beauties as we gained elevation. Huckleberry hounds were thrilled to find the first berries of the season!
On the return trip, we stopped to cool our feet in the spring, some drinking from the pipe which supplied water to the lookout since the '30's.
