Elk Mountain and Kings Mountain are located in the Coast Range and are a popular hiking spot. The two mountains can be joined together to make one longer loop. This is a challenging hike that includes a downhill section where a rope is attached to assist with the slope. Expect this hike to take at least 6.5 hours to cover 11.4 miles and 3900‘ of elevation gain.

Mount Saint Helens, Worm Flows
Party Size:12
Sign-up Status: Open
This Mother’s Day Eve climb is part of a weekend celebrating Mothers on Mount St. Helens. In the past, over 1,000 climbers ascended the mountain wearing dresses to honor their Mothers. Currently, because of the dark forces against anyone having fun or perhaps even against Mothers, the Forest Service now limits the number of permits to a measly 350. Despite the buzz killers, join 349 of your new best friends on Mount St Helens on Saturday Mother’s Day Eve and then spend Sunday with or honoring your Mother.
This is not a wilderness experience. It will demand tolerance for the odd, patience with long lines, and requires wearing a dress. Seriously.
Since this is a good introduction to climbing on snow, at least half of the spots on this climb are reserved for 2025 climb school graduates.
Mt St Helens is technically easy but still a strenuous climb: the Worm Flows route totals 12 miles round trip and 5700 feet of elevation gain. The basic plan is for our group to meet at the Marble Mountain Snow Park (the trailhead for the Worm Flows route) at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11th. You have the option of camping at the trailhead the evening of May 10th or driving up the day of the climb. The permits have been arranged and climbers will reimburse the climb leader the $20 permit fee.

An early season mixed (snow and rock) climb. Suitable for 1st year climbers. 2025 Pod 4 event. Others welcome! Contact climb leader directly to be considered for this event: michael.gurley67@gmail.com
We will start early to get as much of a crowd jump as possible on the way up. After stopping to enjoy the view at Angles Rest we will venture eastward on the usually less crowded continuation trail stopping for lunch at the creekside picnic site. Then on past Wahkeena Spring and Fairy Falls returning via the Wahkeena Falls trail. In the event that we have only one vehicle hike leader will arrange transportation back 2.4 miles to where we left or car. This alternative to the out and back adds less than two miles and negligible additional elevation. Please come prepared with appropriate hiking gear for the always variable Columbia Gorge weather and trail conditions.

This is a PCT section about 40 miles long with about a 600 foot gain to start and then with very minor ups and downs. I have hiked this section many times, and rarely see anyone this early in the season.

I would like to invite backpackers to a slow but still challenging journey through wildflowers and mountain views. The Goat Rocks Wilderness is renowned for its spectacular vistas of Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Saint Helens. We‘ll start and end the trip at Chambers Lake, hiking less than 6.5 miles each day. On day 3 we‘ll either rest or dayhike along the PCT to explore Elk Ridge. The trailhead is located about 2 hours by car from the Outing campsite.
