Nice ramble around the less-traveled south end of Minto-Brown Island.
This is an opportunity for climbers who are looking to assist on a club led climb as an assistant or just to be a more educated climb team member. Topics of discussion for the day will include but are not limited to: Snow anchors/belays refresher, Rope team setup and management, z-pully refresher, basic on the fly avalanche assessment techniques, and winter camping/emergency shelter construction. Since this is a training exercise, and we are not venturing too far off the Palmer snowfield this trip will still go in less than perfect weather. Participants are expected to assist with the Intermediate Snow Skills course the following day.
Prerequisites: This weekend training is open to participants who have previously participated in Intermediate Snow Skills or have equivalent experience (Leader discretion). Participants are expected to know how to belay another climber and rappel using a belay device of their choice, use common climbing language and know how to tie basic climbing knots. Knowledge of basic snow anchors, and rope team set up are highly recommended.
Email Chris Salaz to apply.
We will explore the spring flowers in this Nature Conservancy Preserve. We will also hike a bit in the adjoining Wilderness Park in West Linn. The trails are steep in places and muddy, so poles are helpful. Bring a snack or lunch.
This is an opportunity for climbers of all levels to test and improve their snow climbing skills. Depending on the group’s experience and the snow conditions, these skills may include use of the ice axe on steep snow, crampon technique, team rope travel with pickets on steep snow, building and belaying off of snow anchors and z-pulley (rescue). Since this is a training exercise, and we are not venturing too far off the Palmer snowfield this trip will still go in less than perfect weather.
Prerequisites: This weekend training is open to students who have taken basic climb school, or equivalent experience (Leader discretion). Students are expected to know how to belay another climber and rappel using a belay device of their choice, use common climbing language and know how to tie basic climbing knots.
Email Chris Salaz to sign up.

Backcountry hike through a mossy, old-growth forest
Short hike near Corvallis.
An 8.7 mile hike connecting several trails in the Howard Creek area of Silver Falls State Park.
Hoping for good weather so we can take our time on short scenic hike though a forest area which should yield a generous display of Trillium and Calypso Orchids with slight hope for some early wildflowers in the open areas. Great views from the ridge. There are some steep sections and some potentially slippery spots so good traction footwear and trekking poles are recommended. Please come prepared for Oregon spring weather.
A full day of adventure. A long (12.5-13 mile) hike in the backcountry of Silver Falls State Park. We will do the entire length of the Perimeter Trail, come back down on the Buck Mountain Trail and reconnect to the bottom of the Perimeter Trail via the Roemer‘s Meadow Trail. A bit under 2000 feet elevation gain. This will be a 7 hour hike with lunch break and snack breaks. Bring plenty of water. Much of the hike is in forest shade. $5 daily parking fee or OR Park pass. Please contact leader by text if interested in joining.

We will hike around Clear Lake, through forest and over lava flows. The trail crosses a bridge over the headwaters of the McKenzie River. The blue and turquoise colors of the lake are stunning. The red vine maple and other fall colors add to the beauty of this lake. After having lunch lakeside, we will complete the loop, then drive a short distance to Sahalie Falls and do the short hike down to the falls. Covid vaccinations are required. Bring a face mask for carpooling if the driver requests that.
Note: Clear Lake is at the edge of a closed area due to the Lookout fire. If it is still smokey in that area, or Clear Lake is not accessible, we will do a substitute hike.
