Advanced Snow Skills is for participants of the previous years Intermediate Snow Skills, and/or equivalent training. We will be covering many of the skills necessary for Chemeketan climbers to progress to assistant leader, or just be better teammates on snow rope teams.
Sat, May 2, 2026 at 8:30 AM
We will combine the Baskett Butte Observation platform with the Morgan Lake and Moffitti Marsh loop trail.
Intermediate Snow Skills is the next step for many climb school participants to become more proficient on snow. We will be discussing crampon technique, Z Pulley, basic snow anchors, and belay techniques. At the end of the day we will be doing advanced rope team travel on high angle snow.
This will be an evening learning about building sport climbing anchors and the basics of sport climbing itself.

From Cairo to AbuSimbel and beyond: a grand tour of Egypt and Jordan

This Mother’s Day Eve climb is part of a weekend celebrating Mothers on Mount St. Helens. In the past, over 1,000 climbers ascended the mountain wearing dresses to honor their Mothers. Currently, because of the dark forces against anyone having fun or perhaps even against Mothers, the Forest Service now limits the number of permits to a measly 350. Despite the buzz killers, join 349 of your new best friends on Mount St Helens on Saturday Mother’s Day Eve and then spend Sunday with or honoring your Mother.
This is not a wilderness experience. It will demand tolerance for the odd, patience with long lines, and requires wearing a dress. Seriously.
Since this is a good introduction to climbing on snow, at least half of the spots on this climb are reserved for 2026 climb school graduates.
Mt St Helens is technically easy but still a strenuous climb: the Worm Flows route totals 12 miles round trip and 5700 feet of elevation gain. The basic plan is for our group to meet at the Marble Mountain Snow Park (the trailhead for the Worm Flows route) at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9th. You have the option of camping at the trailhead the evening of May 8th or driving up the day of the climb. The permits have been arranged and climbers will reimburse the climb leader the $20 permit fee.
When: Saturday, May 9, 2026
Where: Washington
Climb Leader(s):
Garry Stephenson
Ellen Gradison
Difficulty: S1
Driving Distance RT: 230 miles from Salem
Climb Distance RT: 12 miles
Elevation Gain: 5,700 ft
A gorgeous retreat for birdwatchers, hikers, dawdlers, Willamette Mission State Park has something for everyone. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the park marks the site of the original Willamette Mission, established in 1834 and washed away by flood in 1861. The park’s 1,300 acres include woodland, wetland, rolling meadows and working farmland. Just eight miles north of Salem and only minutes from I-5, it is a convenient retreat for family picnics and company events.
Short but effective leg & lung workout combined with a nice stroll through Silverton.
Preference will be given to assistant climb leaders and candidates who have formally expressed interest in becoming one.

Hike starts and ends at Hebo Lake Campground.
4.9 miles, 1560‘ elevation
Moderate. May skip some of the lookout points that are difficult.
A lollipop loop with multiple viewpoints of the Columbia River Gorge. Should have lots of wildflowers, great views, cliffs and a waterfall to look at, and a nice forest to walk through.
We will hike into Pamelia Lake through beautiful old growth forest, then continue past the lake to the trail crossing of Pamelia Creek. This hike is in the Mt Jefferson Wilderness.

We are forming a climbing team for a Glacier Peak ascent via Gerdine Ridge / Cool Glacier during the mid-July 2026 window. This is a remote, committing climb that requires strong fitness, sound judgment, and the ability to operate effectively as part of a team.
Scheduling & Commitment: Climbers must be available for a full-week weather window (approximately 5–7 days). Due to the nature of Glacier Peak and its long approach, we will select our exact climb dates based on the most favorable weather and route conditions within that window.
Flexibility is not optional—this is a key part of the commitment.

This trip is intended to be both fun and educational. We will be hiking an easy 3.5 miles from the trailhead to Sisters Mirror Lake, where we will establish a base camp. We will spend a couple of days exploring this wilderness area occasionally traveling off-trail, “staying found” at all times, navigating both with map and compass as well as using modern GPS devices.
