The good news is that the Whitewater Trail into Jefferson Park is open, per the Detroit Ranger District. The bad news is there is already 1 foot of snow shortly up the trail and much more in the forecast. Adventurous snowshoers and skiers may want to try it. Otherwise, hikers can look forward to again visiting one of the most beautiful places in the Cascades this summer.

We had perfect Fall weather for our hike on the Wildwood Trail in Portland’s Forest Park on October 14. Guest Kuca Torres joined members Bev Hassell and Joe Rossitto with leader Trish Rossitto for approximately 8 miles on the fairly smooth trail. We stopped and explored the fun “witch’s castle” or “stone house,” a decorated former bathroom. There were many others on the trail too, hikers, joggers and dogs. We also passed a large group of Portland hikers with the “Endorphin drip” group. Afterward we enjoyed treats at Elephant’s Delicatessen on NW 23rd.

As Bev Hassell and I arrived at the Fanno Creek trailhead at the Garden Home Rec Center, I got word that our third hiker had been called into work. So, Bev and I walked anyway, of course. We enjoyed the clear weather and conversation and views of the creek here and there as we walked through neighborhoods. This was an out and back, and on our return we stopped for pozole soup before returning to the car. Bev found that we’d walked about 7 miles. We then drove south on Oleson Rd to the Nordic NW center and checked it out. It celebrates all things Scandinavian and has a café with a delicious looking menu.

Martin Doerfler, Nadene LeCheminant, Mary Liepins, Sumon Montri, Matt Reike and Sarah Rote hiked the Perimeter Trail in Silver Falls State Park in early November, and saw quite a show. The yellow leaves of vine maples, big leaf maples and Devil’s club were brilliant through the mist of the old growth rain forest. We enjoyed the drip of wet leaves on the ascent and sunshine on the descent, and stopped to say hello to the “Mother Tree” coming and going. There’s nothing like hiking with old and new friends in a beautiful place. Nadene led the hike for Roz Shirack, who wasn’t able to make it. Click "read more" to see photos from the day.

Sixteen Chemeketans and friends participated in this year’s international trek, covering about 80 miles on the Lycian Way, located along the southwest coast of Turkey. Widely considered one of the world’s best treks, as selected by the London Sunday Times and featured in Lonely Planet’s Epic Hikes of the World, the Lycian Way offers a unique combination of natural beauty, quaint villages, sandy beaches (with water warm enough to swim!), sweeping views, bright blue lagoons, and fascinating archeological sites including Roman aqueducts and theaters, Lycian rock cut tombs, and Byzantine churches. The tour also included a day long boat tour of the coast and a cable car ride to the top of Mt Olympos.

The new route from Hwy 22 takes you 6 miles by gravel road up behind the park and deposits you in the permanent camp ground behind the falls. We hiked the August Mountain trail down to the falls and back by the same route. The falls is blocked on both sides because of fallen rocks. A large percentage of the standing trees are dead. Without overstory the route is very exposed to the sun. I would not recommend this hike anytime in the near future. We were fortunate to have a mostly cloudy day. Spending the day in a shady, old growth forest with a lake and cold streams was a great way to escape the 100 degree heat forecast for Salem. We left Salem at 7:00 am and were on the trail by 8:30 am in 57 degree sunshine. The trail to Pamelia Lake was green and lush and had few people. At the lake we were surprised to see it was quite high with hardly any exposed shore. We continued on the Hunts Cove Trail above the north lake shore for over a mile, crossing 5 side creeks along the way. Upon our return we stopped for lunch at the prettiest creek and waterfall. The snow melt creek cooled the air and even gave us goosebumps!

What a perfect day for hiking! Even when we were not under the trees in the shade, the skies were overcast with a slight breeze so it was not hot. While it was a bit of a drive exploring this area off the Umpqua River was well worth it. The hike had a listed Elevation gain of 1100 feet almost all of it came in a steep mile of trail. The reserve designated as white tail deer habitat is mostly oak savannah with open ridge tops with spectacular views. We saw the largest Madrona tree any of us had seen measuring a good four feet through at the base. We completed the loop by returning on the Old Barn trail making the hike about five miles. On our way home we stopped at the iconic drive in in Rice Hill for ice cream. Hikers were Zha and Ken Ash, Jason McHuff, Tom Burke, and John Huff ldr.

Ten of us enjoyed a crisp sunny day in Oregon City. We walked streets with historic homes aplenty then climbed a hidden wooded path to “The Promontory” for views of Mt. Adams and St. Helens with Portland’s wee skyscrapers away off in the distance. We looped back to walk the half-mile-long cliff-top McLoughlin Promenade with old CCC rockwork, staircase, and tunnel, and views over to West Linn Hills and down on Willamette Falls. We took the municipal elevator - on the same site as the original 90-foot wood and steel, hydraulic-powered structure built in 1915. We also briefly toured three 1840’s era homes including the McLoughlin House with an excellent guide. We saw the 1923 (still in use) Fire Station across from the 1925 Carnegie Library. Final reward: lunch across the street at Singer Hill Café – originally a harness shop. Hikers were Eric Vought (guest), Liz Lamade, Mark Ferguson, Ken Ash, Jan Bargen, Patty Baskin, Delmy Edwards, Frances & Michael Beranbaum and leader, Janet Adkins.

Even though the weather reports forecasted rain, thunder, rain showers, and even more rain, there were four of us that decided to go to Yachats and hike the trails. Good thing the weather forecasts were mostly wrong. We did get caught in some rain, but only for about an hour total. The rest of the 3 days spent in the area was absolutely beautiful, even if it was cold.

Day 1: we walked up Salal Hill to get an over view of the Yaquina lighthouse. Then we drove down to Cape Perpetua and hiked the Saint Perpetua Trail. We got caught in the rain for the last 1/2 mile but hung out in the beautiful visitor's center until it cleared up then drove down the beach and looked out over Thor's Well and Devil's Churn.

I learned two things today on this hike. 1) It doesn't have to be any where near high tide to get caught in a sneaker wave and 2) always remember to bring an extra pair of socks and shoes! Even with wet socks and shoes, we explored most of the beach, then an offshoot of the path where we found a nice bench looking out over the bay where we could sit and have our lunch. Even better, we found a small coffee shop in walking distance after our hike where we could get something warm to drink and dessert. Our wet-footed hikers were Margarita Nunez, Mary Liepins, Lisa Reid, Roz Shirack, and leader Sandra Martin.

We had a full crew for this climb up Mt Washington. The 12 of us got on the trail around 5am under clear skies and cool temperatures.
We started off at a brisk pace on the PCT located on the east side of Big Lake.
The north ridge was in good shape with some snow still hugging the gendarmes but wide enough to walk by with little effort.
We made decent time and reached the notch about four hours after leaving the trailhead.
Craig and I lead up the three pitches to the summit while Cathy supervised the climbers as they attached themselves with their prussic cord to ascend the fixed lines.
Obligatory pictures at the top and then the slow process of rappelling the route.
We had 9 first timers to the Washington summit and 7 of them had their first Chemeketan climb.

Unicorn Peak -- 26 June 2022
Roster: Michael Gurley (climb leader), Theresa Conley (assistant), Keith Schloeman, Liz Babbs, Rachel Tuite, Art Gehr, Ashley Nakashimada, Kaitlin Sommerfeld
On Sunday, June 26, a group of 8 Chemeketan climbers met in the parking lot at the Snow Lake trailhead in Mount Rainier National Park and geared up to climb Unicorn Peak. This was a reschedule of a failed attempt to organize a Unicorn climb a month earlier. Crazy amounts of snow and bad weather resulted in unreliable park road accessibility and unreasonable conditions for what was mostly a team of recent climb school graduates. Spirits were high and smiles were evident all around. None of the team had been up Unicorn Peak before, so the shared excitement of what lay ahead was apparent in the trailhead chatter. Five of the team were 2022 Climb School graduates and for four of them, this would be their first club climb. The weather cooperated and all summited successfully.

We went as far north as SE Couch and as far south of SE Caruthers, as far west as SE Water St and east to the Opera House. We saw a lot of street art. We lunched at Hawthorne Asylum Food Carts on 11th and SE Hawthorne which had a lot of choices and what I had, a gyro, was very good. We were stopped by a train and after some 20 minutes or so a person, not in uniform, had us turn around and go in the wrong direction on the one-way street. This hike was moved from April 30th to May 1st because of weather. The flowers at CSRG were great but the numbers of waterfowl was probably less than 20% of what I am used to seeing. Normally this time of year I see about 5 broods of geese and even more broods of ducks, this year no goslings and only 3 broods of ducks, 2 wood duck ducklings and a brood each of mallards and widgeons.

Next on the list was to be Reed College Canyon, however talking to Campus Safety the week before, I was told the campus was open to the public. In actuality the Renn Faire was earlier than usual and the campus closed. We were still able to do the portion that is a wildlife refuge, which was nice and let us accumulate some mud to our footwear.

Lunch was at Laughing Planet on SE Woodstock. Their dinosaurs were apparently laid-off during this time of Covid. After that we had a pleasant walk through the Eastmoreland Neighborhood.

A beautiful Spring day, wonderful companions and wildflowers made for a delightful hike to Mt Pisgah. Hikers Joanne Schiedler, Mary Liepins, Mary Coleman, Bev Hassell and leader, Eileen Harder tackled the elevation part of the hike at the beginning of the trail ( while we all still had lots of energy!) to enjoy a beautifully clear view from the top of Mt Pisgah. Everything was downhill( literally) after that with gorgeous forest trails and wildflowers galore. A great day that ended at the Creswell Bakery where we all ate our fill of scones, cinnamon rolls and cookies. Another wonderful adventure!

Even though we were early in the season, the gardens were beautiful. The wildlife was not as abundant as usual, I saw only one wood duck but no eagles. Mallards, Canada Goose and grebes were abundant. Next we walked alone Division Street and nearby streets from about 23rd to 9th streets and saw several of the Division Street Bronzes and the large Geisha girl near 9th St. Next we headed over to the Madison and 10th St area for more art and lunch at Nicholas Restaurant. A few of the hikers had to leave at this point for other obligations but the rest of us visited 200 SE Clay for the abundant art there. From there we continued north to Ankeny and saw many pieces of art there also.

We squished, splashed, and slid our way through almost 7 miles and ended up with everyone we started with. Crisp late-winter weather, dry roads, good snow, glistening sun breaks, and great company made this a perfect day for our group of 12. Climbing over and under many downed trees across the road added some adventure and challenge. As we gained elevation, the path became clear for the gentle climb through the woods up to the rocky "Olga's" perch. A snow angel was made to celebrate! From our lunch spot, the expansive view toward Mount Jefferson was shrouded in low clouds, but still so spectacular on this mild day.
We felt very lucky to have such good snow, crunchy and fresh on the way up (kudos and thanks to our energetic trailbreaker) and softening as we descended in the afternoon. The predicted rain held off until we were safely gathered around our coffee cups in Mill City. Such a compatible group --each and every one contributed something special to this trip.

We walked about five miles in Stayton on the most beautiful February day imaginable. Having worked up an appetite, we headed south to Scio and the Covered Bridge Coffee House, which surprised us with excellent food and super service. In the early 1900s, 170 Czech families lived in the Scio area. The old Czech hall is still on Main Street and has the Czech initials for the social organization on the sign. Our bellies full, we drove south of Scio to check out (excuse the pun) the Czech graves at Franklin Butte Cemetery. We had, among us, a Czech, and two others with Czech-Slovak heritage. Perfect weather for a hike up the beach, and we arrived at low tide, so the sand was hard and easy to walk on. From the Bay Ocean parking area (no restrooms so no permit required) we hiked north to the Tillamook Bay jetty. Bald eagle on a drift log was a highlight. After lunch on the (jetty) rocks, turned south down the bay side of the spit, stopping at the Bay Ocean town site where state parks has left some very nice tutorial info on the Atlantic City of the West, the town that was swept into the sea. Total hiking distance about 8 miles. Driving distance from Salem - not counting visit to the Tillamook Cheese factory - 160 miles. It was, A Trail of Two Cities. Starting from River Road Park in Salem and braving a rainy weather forecast, eight optimistic Chemeketans walked just short of eight miles to four more Keizer parks - Wallace House, Sunset, Palma Ciea and the crown jewel, Keizer Rapids. Ar KRP we took a series of unmarked but well traveled (by disc golfers) trails to the west boundary of the park where we were able to see from a distance the paddle wheels of the circa 1938 steam tugboat Jean, one of the last three steam boats plying the Columbia, Snake and Willamette rivers. We drove secondary roads to Mt. Angel in a dense fog and parked in the center of town. As we walked up the conifer-lined path to the abbey, we began to see signs of the sun poking through the soup. Our first stop was the cozy, bright coffee shop, “The Press”, where we warmed ourselves with hot beverages. Mt Angel abbey used to have a printing shop, and coffee is served atop equipment from the old presses; thus the double meaning of “The Press”. After visiting the monks’ cemetery, we spent time wandering in the stunning library designed by the famous Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, 50 years ago. Aalto’s furniture in the library is as gorgeous as the library. After short visits to the church and the eclectic museum, we ate (with permission) on the guest house deck overlooking the valley. I would suggest to other hikers: don't hike this trail after significant rainfall. The small patches of snow were not a problem. Members Jim Sellers, Jill Wilson and George Struble, leader.

A couple of days of early snow made for a very dramatic day on Hawk Mountain. It was a wet day, but no rain during our hike. The cloudy weather gives a different dimension to the scenery; Clear Lake and the trail around it are breathtakingly beautiful at any time. The vine maples were turning a nice shade of red. We hiked around the lake, and also took the side trip to Sahalie Falls; some of our hikers had never seen the falls -- or Clear Lake, for that matter. Sixteen non-members joined six Chemeketans on the 1.5-mile private trail along the Siletz River to the log cabin featured in the adventure memoir, "Cabin Fever." At the cabin, Janell Sorensen offered cookies and coffee. We returned on a loop over two hills, past the "writing cabin" with a typewriter where Bill is currently working on a third historical novel set in the Viking Age. On the trail we passed giant Sitka spruce trees, spied on a boater in the river, found bear scat, and noticed lobster mushrooms. After many blue summer days, a few cool rainy days preceded this particular hike making the air crisp and fresh. We labored uphill almost 2 miles to the junction towards North Pyramid and decided to explore that direction to see if we could find a route to the summit. Heading off-trail to a ridge that looked promising we found the way impassable and stopped for "first" lunch before retracing our steps and proceeding to the summit of Middle Pyramid for "second" lunch. The mountains on the horizon were lost in the clouds but mist swirled around the closer peaks making for a magical scene. Lucky us. We didn’t go back to school on the day the rest of the Willamette Valley did but instead to Pamelia Lake and beyond. The weather was perfect and there was a hint of fall color. After reaching the lake, we circled around to the left and continued for another mile and a half or so, turning around at the Pamelia Creek crossing. If you have not done this section beyond the lake (no one had except for Bev), put it on your list; it is really beautiful, with cascades of water coming down the lush mountain side and routed through nicely-constructed channels and under bridges. We explored the timberline meadows on the less-visited north side of Mt. Adams and found such great wildflowers that I got a cover photo for the next edition of my “100 Hikes in NW Oregon & SW Washington” book. We found that the Killen Creek Trail is heavily used by horses, requires a parking permit, and is farther away than the Divide Camp Trail, so we took that route to timberline instead. Between the two routes is Adams Creek, a raging glacial torrent that pretty much stops all day hikers. Determined hikers on the PCT tromp through it knee deep in their hiking shoes, but admit to terror. We had three days of good weather and two nights of tremendous thunder, lightning, and rain. What was billed as a hike and dip in one of the many lakes started out in foggy 40 degree weather and never warmed up much. While statistically this would be classified as a moderately difficult hike much of the elevation is gained in a half mile of rudimentary poorly maintained trail. Another consideration in planing this hike is the very rough last eight miles of gravel road getting to Olallie lake. Hikers were: Blanca Trunakova, Matt Rieke, Jason McHuff, and John Huff ldr.

For its annual June outing, the Beginners’ Backpack returned to the Bull of the Woods Wilderness. We began at Elk Lake and camped the first night at Upper Twin Lake. The next day we packed up and hiked to the confluence of Battle Creek and Elk Lake Creek. On day three we returned to Elk Lake.

Our route took us 14 miles, and we gained 3140 feet. As a bonus we climbed Battle Axe in route to Twin Lakes. This trip has a little of everything you might encounter on a backpack but not too much of anything. It even has two stream crossings. The only thing in excess was the number of logs across the trail. We crossed around 200 the second day of the trip! Certainly an opportunity for some grousing, and well, actually, there was some. According to the before and after photos, however, everyone survived with all body parts intact.

While not perfect, the weather was pretty darn good for our three day, two night adventure. Only day one left a bit to be desired.

We did a small loop there, then hiked up the ridge on a secret path, crossed some downed timber, and arrived in Fairmount Park. From there we walked through neighborhoods back to Bush Park; walked a loop around Deepwood Gardens Park; walked a loop around Pringle Park; and back to our start at Bush Park. Salem explorers were Martin Doerfler, Pam Ferrara, guest Lynnae Ruttledge, and leader Roz Shirack.

The originally scheduled Silver Falls Canyon Trail was closed because of ice, so our alternate was Cascade Head. It was glorious! Chilly to start, but the sun was out and we warmed up quickly as we climbed. There was some mud, but we could navigate and poles made it easier. It was good to start early because there were many groups of hikers coming up as we went down. Five of us enjoyed the day: Mary Coleman, Eileen Harder, Blanka Truneckova, leader Mary Liepins and (completing his second qualifier) Martin Doerfler.

With several inches of fresh powder, our 13-member group headed up Parish Lake Road on the way to Curly-Q Hill. We enjoyed the beauty of the rushing Santiam River and trees heavily flocked with snow. If not for the cloudy sky and snow showers, we would have had views of Mt. Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack along the way. As the wind kicked up on our return trip, we were occasionally blasted with snow blowing off the trees along our route. Despite the weather conditions, it was a great day to be out in the new snow! We had a great ski around the Maxwell Loop out of Maxwell Sno-Park with a stop at South Maxwell Shelter for a lunch break. Snow was plentiful, powdery and fast. Partly sunny skies by late morning were a bonus and really made the snow-laden trees shine. We skied the loop clockwise with a hard 620-foot climb in the first 1.7 miles up the Maxwell Butte summer trail. We then turned south for the first of several long, downhill runs. The last mile to the sno-park is a narrow trail with many turns and whoop-de-do’s for a challenging, fun finale.

The Maxwell Loop is the only trail on the south side of the sno-park and gets much less use than the north side. We saw just a handful of people all day, until we returned to the packed parking lot. Skiers were Sylvia de Lacy, Bill Caldwell, Craig Wojcik, and leader Roz Shirack.

We headed on to the Knoll without further mishap and decided to take the shorter route back to the cars as the weather quickly changed. This was a five-day, 50-miler with 8000 feet of elevation gain. We experienced spectacular canyon scenery, unlike anything I've personally seen so far. We had sun, rain, snow, a mountain goat, a couple of snakes, lots of elk, rugged and faint trails, solitude, stream crossings and sweeping views from Hat Point lookout to the Snake River 5,000+ feet below. We had the full spectrum of weather, from warm sunshine, to soaking rain, and even some snow and frozen wet boots. Long stretches of the trail were remote, and we had our share of bushwhacking through sections that looked like they hadn't been maintained for years. After enduring one of the wettest, coldest and most challenging days and nights I've ever known, we awoke to sunshine and spent our next and final night at the "camp from heaven," with picture perfect views of the Seven Devils Range in Idaho. Doug Lorain (in “Backpacking Oregon”) gives the Rogue River National Scenic Trail a 10 for scenery. The four of us who just completed the 40 mile trek would concur. There were vistas around every bend in the river and the autumnal colors were spectacular. Lorain ranks the trip a 5 for solitude but going in the first week of October bumped that up considerably. We saw one backpacker, 2 BLM employees, one group of rafters, and a few fisherman in drift boats. We pretty much had the trail to ourselves. And it should be said, the rafters invited us to dinner, but since we had just (regrettably) eaten our freeze dried meals, we only sampled the smoked tri-tip steak and had a brownie. . . . More

There we were together and recalling: Lettie Litson, sister Theresa Litson with granddaughter Jaynell, daughter Kay and husband Cletis Mark, and nephew Thomas Litson. This Navajo Nation contingent was together, again, with 15 hikers from Oregon with whom they’d shared days/meals/hikes/laughter over the past 30 summers on annual Chemeketan weeklong trips. Extraordinary! Lots of food and stories, lots of laughter and memories, fond recalling of some no longer with us, all recollections tied tightly with bonds of warm affection. Like being in Canyon de Chelly, it was a time of good medicine...more

August 10 - 12, 2018. Jefferson Park is as beautiful as ever. Last year’s fire burned all of the Whitewater Trail, from the parking lot to the Pacific Crest Trail, leaving alpine meadows and lakes intact. The Whitewater route was so damaged that we hiked the South Breitenbush Trail. It’s completely unburned, but is a mile longer, gains an extra 1000 feet of elevation, and has a 4-mile stretch where the trailbed is full of loose rocks. The online campsite reservation system has been discontinued so there was an afternoon scramble to secure one of the 30 approved sites marked by a post. We occupied 4 sites on different sides of Bays Lake, went swimming, and had a grand time. Leader Bill Sullivan was joined by Chemeketan members Linda Parker and Larry Vuylsteke; Obsidian members Scott Hovis, Ben Brown, Rebecca Eastwood, and Sue Wolling; and guests Janell Sorensen, Ian Sullivan, Marissa Evans, and Debbie Bauer...more

August 11, 2018. Joanne Schiedler joined a three-generation hike today -- George Struble, his son Andy, and his granddaughter Lauren Yumibe (Andy's niece). A heartwarming experience. Compared to the weeks before and after, the day was fairly cool; we even put back on shirts or jackets while eating lunch. Lauren waded; none of us swam. We were saddened to hike through areas burned by recent forest fires, but the areas around the lakes themselves were untouched. Guests Andy Struble and Lauren Yumibe, members Joanne Schiedler and George Struble, leader.

Weather report for "hot and hazy" didn't deter 8 of us from enjoying 2 lovely mountain lakes. The trail was a bit dusty, but the wildfire smoke was not noticeable. We dipped parts of our bodies into the headwaters of the Santiam River to cool our path out. Thanks to a Chemeketan story in the Silverton paper "Our Town" http://ourtownlive.com/ourtown/?p=8593, we had 3 new hikers: Karen Reed, Isobella Flores and Bonnie Dombrowsky. Memebers: Roz Shirack, Nancy Rockwell, Margarita Saxe, Bill Nelson and Mary Coleman, leader.

On August 19, nine of us set forth to check out the look of the Jeff Wilderness one year after the Whitewater Fire. We found some green, some brown, some black and a glimmer of new "comeback" green. Five of the hikers had never been on the hike, so a trip into Boca Cave was called for. The trail down is burned and eroded and a real mess, but all declared it worth the scramble. Hikers were Mary Liepins, Sandi Simons, Peter Simons, Emily Wieczorek, Gayle Smith, Sarah Boomer, Sharon Wright, Ralph Nafziger and Mary Coleman, leader.
