The weather could not have been better for our hike to Chehalem Ridge Nature Park outside of Gaston. It's always fun to "cobble together" short trails to emerge as a 7.5 mile hike. Trail conditions were great and the views were stunning; Mt St Helens, Mt Adams, Mt Rainier to name a few.
We also saw the beginnings of wildflower blooms; fawn lilies, calypso orchids, camas, trillium and "others". We even saw a horse wearing hiking boots!
10 hikers enjoyed each others company and the scenery and ended the day with coffee and yummy bakery goods!
Hikers were left-right, Lynette Torgeson, Eileen Harder(leader),Susan Proffitt, Sumon Montri, Mark Ferguson, Roz Shirack, Karyn Pressel, Suzi Rose, with Helen Wang in the front row. Our intrepid photographer was Beverly Hassell!

It was an absolutely perfect day for hiking, a little chilly and a few raindrops at the beginning of the hike but then the sun came out and it was an absolutely beautiful day. Except for the mud puddles and the slippery mud in and around the mud puddles. But other than that, yeah, a beautiful day. Hikers were Ann Adamcik, Darlene Beyerle, Becky Hickox, Sandra Martin (leader), Kathy McSween, Karyn Pressel, Diana Upton, and Jim Wilson.

Although we had to wander around and finally put in the GPS coordinates of a couple of the trees, we were able to find 3 out of 4. The 4th one was several blocks away and we decided we had gotten our 2+ miles in looking for the first 3 trees. The good sports (and tree spotters) were Mark Ferguson, Robert Roner, and leader Sandra Martin.

Seven Chemeketans enjoyed a nice uncrowded, March day with a nine+ mile hike of the Ten Falls Trail at Silver Falls. We started at the new North Canyon parking area and saw the new viewpoint for North Falls. We were joined on several occasions by a friendly raven that wanted to show us what it was eating. Not sure if it was the same one or his or her friends.

Hikers were Pam Thomas, Chris O'Brien, Kathleen Hynes, Sumon Montri, Roz Shirack, Leader Steve Engler, and Sue Engler behind the camera. Click "read more" to see some pics from the trip.

We started for Eugene in sub freezing fog but by the time we arrived at the trailhead we had bright sunshine. The trail is one of the newer additions to the Ridgeline system and while some of it is under power lines much of it feels pretty remote for an urban hike. We did the loop and summited Bailey Hill for about four miles and 700 feet elevation. It was an enjoyable hike and a nice post Thanksgiving work out. We stopped at Country Java in Coburg for their 'Best in the West' coffee shakes on the way back. Hikers were: Debra Dawes, Tom Burke, Zsa DuBois, Ken Ash, and John Huff ldr.

While it was a bit of a drive exploring this area off the Umpqua River was well worth it. The hike had a listed Elevation gain of 1100 feet almost all of it came in a steep mile of trail. The reserve designated as white tail deer habitat is mostly oak savannah with open ridge tops with spectacular views. We saw the largest Madrona tree any of us had seen measuring a good four feet through at the base. We completed the loop by returning on the Old Barn trail making the hike about five miles. On our way home we stopped at the iconic drive in in Rice Hill for ice cream. Hikers were Zha and Ken Ash, Jason McHuff, Tom Burke, and John Huff ldr.

Ten of us enjoyed a crisp sunny day in Oregon City. We walked streets with historic homes aplenty then climbed a hidden wooded path to “The Promontory” for views of Mt. Adams and St. Helens with Portland’s wee skyscrapers away off in the distance. We looped back to walk the half-mile-long cliff-top McLoughlin Promenade with old CCC rockwork, staircase, and tunnel, and views over to West Linn Hills and down on Willamette Falls. We took the municipal elevator - on the same site as the original 90-foot wood and steel, hydraulic-powered structure built in 1915. We also briefly toured three 1840’s era homes including the McLoughlin House with an excellent guide. We saw the 1923 (still in use) Fire Station across from the 1925 Carnegie Library. Final reward: lunch across the street at Singer Hill Café – originally a harness shop. Hikers were Eric Vought (guest), Liz Lamade, Mark Ferguson, Ken Ash, Jan Bargen, Patty Baskin, Delmy Edwards, Frances & Michael Beranbaum and leader, Janet Adkins.

Good thing the weather forecasts were mostly wrong. We did get caught in some rain, but only for about an hour total. The rest of the 3 days spent in the area was absolutely beautiful, even if it was cold.

Day 1: we walked up Salal Hill to get an over view of the Yaquina lighthouse. Then we drove down to Cape Perpetua and hiked the Saint Perpetua Trail. We got caught in the rain for the last 1/2 mile but hung out in the beautiful visitor's center until it cleared up then drove down the beach and looked out over Thor's Well and Devil's Churn.

I learned two things today on this hike. 1) It doesn't have to be any where near high tide to get caught in a sneaker wave and 2) always remember to bring an extra pair of socks and shoes! Even with wet socks and shoes, we explored most of the beach, then an offshoot of the path where we found a nice bench looking out over the bay where we could sit and have our lunch. Even better, we found a small coffee shop in walking distance after our hike where we could get something warm to drink and dessert. Our wet-footed hikers were Margarita Nunez, Mary Liepins, Lisa Reid, Roz Shirack, and leader Sandra Martin.

After pausing for a lunch break, we made our way back to our cars and enjoyed delicious chocolate chip cookies made by Marie. Our group of hikers were Chris O'Brien, Jay Orand, Kathleen Hynes, Katy Dockter, Marie Flores, and Sandra Martin, leader.

Leader: Scott Phillips
Assistants: Craig Blanton and Cathy Lazarus
Climbers: Jay Howe, Sean Stack, Drissana Tran, Ash Nakashimada, Sean Wollen, Nandini Chaturvedi, Kevin Fisher, Anthony Jay, Joshua Butler

We had a full crew for this climb up Mt Washington. The 12 of us got on the trail around 5am under clear skies and cool temperatures.
We started off at a brisk pace on the PCT located on the east side of Big Lake.
The north ridge was in good shape with some snow still hugging the gendarmes but wide enough to walk by with little effort.
We made decent time and reached the notch about four hours after leaving the trailhead.
Craig and I lead up the three pitches to the summit while Cathy supervised the climbers as they attached themselves with their prussic cord to ascend the fixed lines.
Obligatory pictures at the top and then the slow process of rappelling the route.
We had 9 first timers to the Washington summit and 7 of them had their first Chemeketan climb.

Unicorn Peak -- 26 June 2022
Roster: Michael Gurley (climb leader), Theresa Conley (assistant), Keith Schloeman, Liz Babbs, Rachel Tuite, Art Gehr, Ashley Nakashimada, Kaitlin Sommerfeld
On Sunday, June 26, a group of 8 Chemeketan climbers met in the parking lot at the Snow Lake trailhead in Mount Rainier National Park and geared up to climb Unicorn Peak. This was a reschedule of a failed attempt to organize a Unicorn climb a month earlier. Crazy amounts of snow and bad weather resulted in unreliable park road accessibility and unreasonable conditions for what was mostly a team of recent climb school graduates. Spirits were high and smiles were evident all around. None of the team had been up Unicorn Peak before, so the shared excitement of what lay ahead was apparent in the trailhead chatter. Five of the team were 2022 Climb School graduates and for four of them, this would be their first club climb. The weather cooperated and all summited successfully.

We did God's Thumb on the coast after Stahlman Point trail didn't open as expected by Detroit ranger district. On a day with temperatures in the 90's in the valley it was the cool choice. We were serenaded by Swainsons Thrush along the way as identified by Susan's bird app. It wasn't the fastest pace as there were a lot of stops to pick Salmonberries and ID flowers. We had a special treat when we were able to spot whales from the high meadow above the Thumb. Views of the coast were spectacular. On our return trip we stopped at a cherry stand in Grand Ronde. Walking around the ponds we spotted a huge heron, unfortunately too far away to take his picture, we saw several turtles sunning on a log, the beavers were hiding or napping in the thick vegetation, but we saw evidence of their present by a shaved tree trunk. We walked on to the campgrounds and the roaring North Santiam then back to the cars. We stopped at the Gingerbread house for lunch and more great conversation. Members were M. Most of people canceled because of weather or Covid, but despite rain all the way to Portland the walk was precipitation free. Even had some sunshine and warm temperatures. The walk consisted of 3 park and walk sections, each probably a little over two miles. We went as far north as SE Couch and as far south of SE Caruthers, as far west as SE Water St and east to the Opera House. We saw a lot of street art. We lunched at Hawthorne Asylum Food Carts on 11th and SE Hawthorne which had a lot of choices and what I had, a gyro, was very good. We were stopped by a train and after some 20 minutes or so a person, not in uniform, had us turn around and go in the wrong direction on the one-way street. Later I got stuck for a stoplight malfunction on Mission at 12th.

This hike was moved from April 30th to May 1st because of weather. The flowers at CSRG were great but the numbers of waterfowl was probably less than 20% of what I am used to seeing. Normally this time of year I see about 5 broods of geese and even more broods of ducks, this year no goslings and only 3 broods of ducks, 2 wood duck ducklings and a brood each of mallards and widgeons.

Next on the list was to be Reed College Canyon, however talking to Campus Safety the week before, I was told the campus was open to the public. In actuality the Renn Faire was earlier than usual and the campus closed. We were still able to do the portion that is a wildlife refuge, which was nice and let us accumulate some mud to our footwear.

Lunch was at Laughing Planet on SE Woodstock. Their dinosaurs were apparently laid-off during this time of Covid. After that we had a pleasant walk through the Eastmoreland Neighborhood.

We saw Woodburn falls and the lower lacamas creek falls. A good leg stretcher. Not all the trails in this park are marked well and we ended up exiting the park at the parking lot on Crown Road and then hiked down this road to 3rd St an d to the parking lot there. A good hike with a great new member.

In the middle of a rainy spell, we had a fine day, but with very little sun on us because we were on the north side of hills. We enjoyed our hike to Pup Creek Falls, with only a little trailside snow. One feature of this hike is the bench at the trailhead, with various objects imbedded in the bench surface; on one side of the base is a sculpture of a bear, and on the other side a rhinoceros! It was, A Trail of Two Cities. Starting from River Road Park in Salem and braving a rainy weather forecast, eight optimistic Chemeketans walked just short of eight miles to four more Keizer parks - Wallace House, Sunset, Palma Ciea and the crown jewel, Keizer Rapids. Ar KRP we took a series of unmarked but well traveled (by disc golfers) trails to the west boundary of the park where we were able to see from a distance the paddle wheels of the circa 1938 steam tugboat Jean, one of the last three steam boats plying the Columbia, Snake and Willamette rivers. (Google it for the story and pictures of the boat, still afloat in the Multnomah channel near Scapoose.) The hikers were, Julia Westerberg, Roger King, Elizabeth Seibert, Marcia Kenagy, Nanci Chambers, Sylvia Dawson, John Maurice and leader Martin Doerfler, whose wife Carol joined in for a few miles. And, because Chemeketans are either uniquely blessed or plain lucky, only the last quarter mile of the hike/walk was wet.

We kicked off the new year Chemeketan style with a beautiful hike past the waterfalls on the Canyon Trail. The rains held off during our 7.7 mile hike. Water thundered over the falls and bright green moss dripped from the trees. We were fortunate to run into the Chemeketan snowshoe hikers that diverted to Silver Falls that day. Good comradery on a stunning hike that I never tire taking: what an excellent start to the new year!!

Sixteen of us traversed Bush Park and the lovely Fairmount Hills neighborhood of Salem, enjoying the rain-free day, the yard art, and the plants. We can sing, too! We made an unannounced short stop at the home of longtime Chemeketans Lela and Wilbur Jackson. Lela had a stroke several years ago and is in a wheelchair. We sang three Christmas carols for her, and she joined in. (Yes, 16 surprise guests do fit into the Jacksons’ small kitchen.) Lela asked us to “go hike for her.” Patty Baskin was on her first Chemeketan walk, and Nancy Warnicke completed her second qualifying activity. Nine of us took time out from the holiday rush and hiked up Stahlman Point. You could tell these were Chemeketans because they showed up even though it was cloudy and possible rain was in the forecast. Hiking in the sunshine is nice, but the woods take on a whole other character when it’s foggy. The fog seemed to mute the highway noise you occasionally hear on this trail, so we enjoyed a quiet hike up to the old lookout site. We could see about a third of snow-covered Jefferson so we had a bit of a view. We might even have worked off a couple of Christmas cookies! Participants were Martin Doerfler, Mary Coleman, Nadene LeCheminant, Deanna Davis, Roxanne Wilson, Karin Shinn, Gayle Smith and (not pictured) Marcia Kenagy and leader Mary Liepins.

We drove secondary roads to Mt. Angel in a dense fog and parked in the center of town. As we walked up the conifer-lined path to the abbey, we began to see signs of the sun poking through the soup. Our first stop was the cozy, bright coffee shop, “The Press”, where we warmed ourselves with hot beverages. Mt Angel abbey used to have a printing shop, and coffee is served atop equipment from the old presses; thus the double meaning of “The Press”. After visiting the monks’ cemetery, we spent time wandering in the stunning library designed by the famous Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, 50 years ago. Aalto’s furniture in the library is as gorgeous as the library. After short visits to the church and the eclectic museum, we ate (with permission) on the guest house deck overlooking the valley. Adams and found such great wildflowers that I got a cover photo for the next edition of my “100 Hikes in NW Oregon & SW Washington” book. We found that the Killen Creek Trail is heavily used by horses, requires a parking permit, and is farther away than the Divide Camp Trail, so we took that route to timberline instead. For its annual June outing, the Beginners’ Backpack returned to the Bull of the Woods Wilderness. We began at Elk Lake and camped the first night at Upper Twin Lake. The next day we packed up and hiked to the confluence of Battle Creek and Elk Lake Creek. On day three we returned to Elk Lake.

Our route took us 14 miles, and we gained 3140 feet. As a bonus we climbed Battle Axe in route to Twin Lakes. This trip has a little of everything you might encounter on a backpack but not too much of anything. It even has two stream crossings. The only thing in excess was the number of logs across the trail. We crossed around 200 the second day of the trip! Certainly an opportunity for some grousing, and well, actually, there was some. According to the before and after photos, however, everyone survived with all body parts intact.

While not perfect, the weather was pretty darn good for our three day, two night adventure. Only day one left a bit to be desired.

We continued on up to the top of Iron Mt for lunch where we identified the many surrounding peaks from the “mountain finder” map on the summit platform. Clouds obscured the tops of the highest Cascade peaks, but that did not diminish the joy we felt from hiking this unique ridge and peak called Iron Mt. We finished our day with ice cream and iced coffees at the Idanha Country Store.
Hikers were Randy Selig, Larry Vuylsteke, Rick Cooper, Blanka Truneckova, Nancy Rockwell, Vivienne Torgeson, Scott Torgeson, guest Nicole Blanco-Mills, and leader Roz Shirack.

We had great views of the mountains, a lovely display of avalanche lilies, and perfect weather. On the down side, the trail was literally obliterated for quite a bit of the way by dense huckleberry bushes. Despite missing the turn to Mount Beachie (leader's fault...) and adding an extra mile to the day (total of almost 10 miles), everyone enjoyed the trek and hailed the day a success. It’s hard to beat Smith Rock State Park for dramatic scenery. It was particularly awesome for our hike under a sunny, blue sky. We hiked the newer and longer River and Summit Trail loop, which was a new trail for several in our group. The Crooked River Canyon was beautiful with green grassy slopes below the sheer cliffs and whitewater sections on the Crooked River from the recent rains. After descending to the river we hiked several miles along the River Trail, stopping often to admire the cliff faces, birds, and flowers. The seasonal waterfall seldom seen across the river was flowing full. We hiked past Monkey Face and began the gradual climb up the ridge on the Summit Trail.
We stopped for lunch on the ridge top where we could look down on the river and canyon. We also had a panoramic view of the Cascades from Mt. Bachelor to Mt. Hood. Even the lesser peaks of Belknap Crater, Black Crater, Black Butte, and Ollalie Butte, looked impressive, covered with snow. The remaining climb

Our planned Columbia Gorge trail was closed due to a rock slide, so we decided to do an early season hike into Marion Lake and beyond if snow allowed. The day was sunny and cool as we started our hike through the beautiful forest. We reached Lake Ann without encountering any snow. But large snow patches on the trail occurred immediately beyond the lake at about 4,000 ft of elevation. The outlet stream was flowing over the trail.

We soon reached Marion Lake and took the scenic route along the western lake shore with a nice view of Three Fingered Jack. As soon as we crossed the bridge over the swift flowing outlet stream of Marion Lake, we were met by deep snow as far as the eye could see. We gingerly walked a short distance over the soft snow, but turned around after breaking through numerous times. It was a pretty lake; however, and the trail itself was lined with autumnal huckleberry bushes in full glory. Enjoying the fall day were Margarita Saxe, Marcia Kenagy and Mary Coleman, leader.

This beautiful late summer day brought out a fearsome expeditionary force of 15 to visit this nice area of the Olallie Scenic Area. The lakes were a bit low, but the foliage was beginning to turn and the sky was blue and the air cool...perfect autumn kickoff.

We had 4 first time hikers: Mike Grady, Patricia McCarty, Ginger Rogg and Helmutt Rogg. Helping me keep the troops on track were veteran Chemeks: Marcia Kenagy, Ralph Nafziger, Mike Koyama, Becky Engeln, Lynnette Olesen, Becky Hickox, Kayleen Warner, Sarah Boomer, Vivienne and Scott Torgeson and Mary Coleman, leader.

We had a beautiful day for my annual Clear Lake hike. Yes, the vine maple was turning red, and Sahalie Falls thundered appropriately. But for sheer beauty, the lake itself and the Oregon forest can't be beat! Guests Nassi Danesh and Rainey Castleberry; members John Huff, Tonya Johnson, Jane Maute, Corky Moore, Ralph Nafziger, and George Struble, leader.

August 22, 2018. My appreciation to Karen and Nancy for putting up with two 86-year-old coots and an autism-spectrum 20-year-old (who is a good hiker). My college friend Brice, now living in Pasadena, hiked with us, and my grandson from Indianapolis was here in a family visit. It was the last day of our heat wave, and smoky, but neither of those bothered us. We spotted my car at Trailbridge Reservoir and made a seven-mile one-way hike downstream from Sahalie Falls. Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls were awesome as usual. For some of us, Tamolich Pool -- also known as "the blue pool" -- was even more awesome, and so unexpected after we had hiked down the dry riverbed! Guests Brice Harris, Karen Reed, and Mackenzie Yumibe, and members Nancy Mauter and leader George Struble.

August 23, 2018. We had a cool, smoke-free evening for a nice five-mile walk. We headed across Englewood Park, traversed the “North Campus” of the State Hospital, walked behind the Hospital and visited the poignant memorial with the unclaimed ashes of thousands of patients who died between 1913 and 1971 (https://www.oregon.gov/oha/osh/Documents/OSH-Memorial-Booklet.pdf), continued to Geer Park, enjoyed the Marion County Extension Service/Master Gardener test gardens, and crossed the disc golf course on the State Hospital property. Members Beverly Hassell and Blanka Truneckova, who had never visited any of these places, joined leader Elizabeth Seibert.

July 4, 2018. On a perfect balmy evening we met at the Capitol. We headed across 12th into the Chemeketa Historic District and walked those streets with their fabulous old homes. Then we headed to North High School and studied the wonderful nature mural at the Straub Environmental Center. Afterwards we walked to Waldo Park and reflected on the war memorials there. Finally, we walked through downtown to the Martha Springer Garden on the Willamette campus where there were a mixed group of nutria and mallard ducks on the edge of the Mill Race. A casual theme of this hike was to explore as many of the bridges over Mill Creek and the Mill Race as possible. Along the way we enjoyed the patriotic decorations on a lot of the houses and saw many sidewalk barbecue parties and small fireworks displays. Participants were Barbara Dolan, Sylvia Dawson, Jane Maute, Susan Arbor, Diane Schoenrock, Marcia Hoak, Lin Crimshaw, Pam Wasson and leader Carol Soderberg...more

July 7, 2018. A horde of 18 (yep, you read that right) happy hikers enjoyed a peerless summer day on Bugaboo Ridge and Bachelor Mountain. Flowers, views and great company were enjoyed by one and all. We were: Bobbie Snead, Sharon Wright, Sherrill Breen, Lynette Olesen, Sandi Simons, Peter Simons, Dan Moung, Phyllis Benanti, Gayle Smith, Deanna Davis, Tom Davis, Don Orwick, Mike Koyama, Bonnie Arias, Mary Coleman, Bill Geibel, Ralph Nafziger, Doris deLespinasse.

July 8, 2018. We hiked to the top of Coffin Mt under sunny skies with constant views of Mt. Jefferson, Three Fingered Jack, Mt. Washington, and the Three Sisters, plus Mt Hood and Mt Adams after reaching the summit. There was a wide variety of wildflowers in the steep meadows, but alas, very little bear grass in bloom. A good reason to return next year. One of my favorite sightings was the Pacific hounds tongue, a common plant that I seldom see in bloom. It's tall stalk of small blue flowers was just opening. Hikers were guest Nadene Le Cheminant on her first qualifying hike, Dan Moung, Nameun House, and leader Roz Shirack.

July 14, 2018. It wasn't too hot for the hike up to Table Rock or for a few sweet smelling lilies. Other than a small amount of haze, we saw all the peaks - great views! Leader found a winner place for Ice Cream afterwards. It was too cold for any of us to stay inside! Guests Janet & Jim Locniker joined us from Arizona along with Celine Livengood, Roz Shirack, Traci & Dave Wilson, Tom & leader Deanna Davis.

July 18, 2018. We started at Union Station and over the pedestrian bridge to the Willamette Greenway and south to Tom McCall Waterfront park. Then we headed away from the river past the Skidmore Fountain and into the Old Town/China Town districts. We studied some of the artifacts in those areas and then walked through the North Park Blocks to the heart of the Pearl District near Powell’s Books, with a coffee break at Peet’s. We continued north and east into the NW 13th Avenue Historic District with its characteristic warehouse buildings and loading docks. Then we cut under I-405 and entered Slabtown where we had a fantastic lunch at Besaw’s (yum!). After lunch we headed over to trendy NW 23rd and ended our day with ice cream at Salt and Straw (double yum!). Participants were guests Jane Perry and Lori Steffens and members Sylvia Dawson, Suzy Overturf, Patty Schaffers, Greda van Veen, Corriene Thompson, Marcia Hoak and leader Carol Soderberg...more

July 19, 2018. Just four of us enjoyed a nice evening hike which included Croisan Trail and the loop trails around north and west side of Sprague High School. Most of this 2 hour, 3.5 mile evening hike is in shade so temperature is usually very pleasant (and was). Members included Marcia Hoak, Sharon Wright, Neil Peterson (leader), and guest Helen Mazel Hart.

July 21, 2018. We had a wonderful group of Chemeketans join for a hike to the cool and beautiful Stahlman Point Trail. Being that it was a weekend, the trail was quite crowded ( people and dogs) and it was a bit tight at the top, but well worth the climb. Chemeketans Debra Driscoll, Mary Elliott, Rosamund Irwin, Nancy Mauter (who was carrying an extra 23# in her backpack as part of training for a backpacking trip!), Peter and Sandi Simons and Rosanna Wilson, joined leader Eileen Harder for this sweet hike and fabulous ice cream in Mill City on the way home!

July 22, 2018. We five women had Tumble Lake all to ourselves on this warm, sunny day in July. After going to the top of Dome, we made our way down the rough path to the lake. Since I was last there, some dear trail folks had rerouted the worst of the trail. A lovely change.

We lunched in the shade by the deep blue-green lake before we kicked off our boots and made for the water. The steep, up-hill trudge out of the lake basin took care of any wet clothes.

I don't know who invited the biting flies. No bueno! Hikers were: Lynnette Olesen, Roz Shirack, Becky Hickox, Vicki Kimpton and Mary Coleman, ldr.

July 29, 2108. Will this hot spell ever end?? Instead of the long drive into the Olallie, we opted for an early, short drive to the forested Perimeter Trail at Silver Falls. All nine of us were very happy with the choice and had put in our 6 miles by noon. I'll lead the Red Lake hike in September. Hikers: Becky Hickox, Linda Willnow, Ralph Nafziger, Margarita Nunez, Nanci Chambers, Eileen Harder, Margaret Saxe and Celine Livengood (second qualifier), and Mary Coleman, leader.

July 29, 2018. A very warm day was expected, so only one person signed up. But she was bringing a carful of seven people: a Corvallis family including four daughters plus a friend. A good hike plus swimming in TWO lakes: what a good use for a warm July day! We hiked through a lot of forest fire damage, but not around either Matthieu Lake. Guests Avery and Justin Briggs, their daughters Bella, Emmy, Ella, and Mollie Briggs, and Kianna Johnston, and leader George Struble.

August 3, 2018. We had a fabulous fun packed day! We started at the exquisite gardens of the recreation of the circa 1829 Hudson Bay Company fort. We watched a super informative presentation at the blacksmiths' workshop and then headed north to the beautifully maintained historical US Army sites on the fort grounds. Afterwards we continued into downtown Vancouver and learned a lot about the history of the city. Along the way we had a terrific lunch at Dulin’s Cafe. After lunch we walked along the Columbia before returning back to the fort via a really cool land bridge. On our way out of town we stopped at Ice Cream Renaissance to fortify ourselves for the struggle with the Friday afternoon traffic. Participants were member to be Paul Justus, members Janet Templar, Lin Crimshaw, Corriene Thompson, Judy Vaughan, Patty Schaffers, Naomi Penawit, Greda van Veen, Nameun House and leader Carol Soderberg.

June 25, 2018. A highlight of life is that we get to live it together. When we have a reunion, we, together, recall those sweet times.

There we were together and recalling: Lettie Litson, sister Theresa Litson with granddaughter Jaynell, daughter Kay and husband Cletis Mark, and nephew Thomas Litson. This Navajo Nation contingent was together, again, with 15 hikers from Oregon with whom they’d shared days/meals/hikes/laughter over the past 30 summers on annual Chemeketan weeklong trips. Extraordinary! Lots of food and stories, lots of laughter and memories, fond recalling of some no longer with us, all recollections tied tightly with bonds of warm affection. Like being in Canyon de Chelly, it was a time of good medicine...more

August 10 - 12, 2018. Jefferson Park is as beautiful as ever. Last year’s fire burned all of the Whitewater Trail, from the parking lot to the Pacific Crest Trail, leaving alpine meadows and lakes intact. The Whitewater route was so damaged that we hiked the South Breitenbush Trail. It’s completely unburned, but is a mile longer, gains an extra 1000 feet of elevation, and has a 4-mile stretch where the trailbed is full of loose rocks. The online campsite reservation system has been discontinued so there was an afternoon scramble to secure one of the 30 approved sites marked by a post. We occupied 4 sites on different sides of Bays Lake, went swimming, and had a grand time. Leader Bill Sullivan was joined by Chemeketan members Linda Parker and Larry Vuylsteke; Obsidian members Scott Hovis, Ben Brown, Rebecca Eastwood, and Sue Wolling; and guests Janell Sorensen, Ian Sullivan, Marissa Evans, and Debbie Bauer...more

August 11, 2018. Joanne Schiedler joined a three-generation hike today -- George Struble, his son Andy, and his granddaughter Lauren Yumibe (Andy's niece). A heartwarming experience. Compared to the weeks before and after, the day was fairly cool; we even put back on shirts or jackets while eating lunch. Lauren waded; none of us swam. We were saddened to hike through areas burned by recent forest fires, but the areas around the lakes themselves were untouched. Guests Andy Struble and Lauren Yumibe, members Joanne Schiedler and George Struble, leader.

Weather report for "hot and hazy" didn't deter 8 of us from enjoying 2 lovely mountain lakes. The trail was a bit dusty, but the wildfire smoke was not noticeable. We dipped parts of our bodies into the headwaters of the Santiam River to cool our path out. Thanks to a Chemeketan story in the Silverton paper "Our Town" http://ourtownlive.com/ourtown/?p=8593, we had 3 new hikers: Karen Reed, Isobella Flores and Bonnie Dombrowsky. Memebers: Roz Shirack, Nancy Rockwell, Margarita Saxe, Bill Nelson and Mary Coleman, leader.

On August 19, nine of us set forth to check out the look of the Jeff Wilderness one year after the Whitewater Fire. We found some green, some brown, some black and a glimmer of new "comeback" green. Five of the hikers had never been on the hike, so a trip into Boca Cave was called for. The trail down is burned and eroded and a real mess, but all declared it worth the scramble. Hikers were Mary Liepins, Sandi Simons, Peter Simons, Emily Wieczorek, Gayle Smith, Sarah Boomer, Sharon Wright, Ralph Nafziger and Mary Coleman, leader.
